Welcome to the Department of German Studies

The Department of German Studies at Birmingham enjoys a long-standing national and international reputation as one of the best in the country. In the National Student Survey for 2008, the Department was rated second highest in the group of Russell Universities, with an overall student satisfaction rating of 93%. In the Times Good University Guide 2010, Birmingham is ranked in the top ten for German.

In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, the Department of German Studies at Birmingham was ranked equal first in the country on the percentage (60%) of our research activity judged to be of international excellence (3*) or world leading (4*), and achieved the third highest average score of 2.60.

We offer an exceptionally broad and flexible curriculum, with options in German politics, history and culture since the Middle Ages, business German and historical and modern linguistics. Whilst many of our students have studied German before they come to Birmingham, we also offer an intensive course in Beginners' German.


Undergraduate courses

A wide variety of degree combinations involving German is offered, to allow students to choose whether to focus to a greater or lesser extent on German.

German can be studied ab initio at Birmingham in all the degree programmes above other than Single Honours German, for which an A-level in German is required.
